Allen County’s Cuevas sets new school mark in 5K race
JOPLIN, Mo. — Maresa Cuevas, sophomore from Parsons, now holds Allen County Community College’s record for women’s cross country.
Cuevas ran the 5K course at the Missouri Southern State University’s Southern Stampede Saturday in 19 minutes 22 seconds. She finished in 56th place to lead the Red Devil women to a 26th placing as a team.
Cuevas vaulted from third on the fast time list (19:57 in 2007) to first. The old record was set in 2007 by Ashley Stanley, 19:36.
Allen County head coach Clinton Fletcher said all the Red Devil runners — women and men — had personal best times in their respective races.
Brecken Larson was ACCC’s No. 2 runner on the day with a 21:07.9 for 135th place. Kelsey Wilson placed 166th in 22:10.9 and Danielle Mingle placed 185th in 23:10.
Caitlin Goff ran the race in 34:24.36 for 221st.
“Caitlin walled onto the cross country team with no experience but with her effort we were able to get a team score now that we have five girls running,” Fletcher said. “We beat Coffeyville and Neosho County at the meet.”
Travis Guess was the top finisher for Allen County’s men as he ran the 8K course in 29:49.8. Stephen Dodson was 137th in 30:30.7 followed by Nick Yoho in 138th in 30:32.1 and Kaleb Rockers in 140th in 30:46.
Andrew Cooper placed 256th in 34:30.6 and Jean Frenot was 258th in 34:37.3. Antonio Burnett was 263rd in 34:59.4.
The ACCC teams have a week off.
