GAS — Though Gas council members won’t participate in the decision, Terry McDonald told them Tuesday evening about a request he has made of Allen County to re-zone property he owns to heavy industrial.
McDonald bent the Gas governing body’s ear because the land is little more than a stone’s throw east of town along the north side of U.S. 54.
McDonald owns TJ Towing, a business that includes storing damaged vehicles. McDonald said he would plant cedar trees as a screen to hide what many may view as an eyesore.
McDonald’s aim with the zoning change is to permit him to directly market the unclaimed vehicles to recycling centers in Kansas City, rather than have to sell them locally — he mentioned Ray’s Metal Depot — and consequently sacrifice a share of profits.
Allen County’s Planning Board will decide the zoning issue on May 28.
McDonald added he knew Gas council members weren’t fond of his plans to develop a salvage yard, when it was closer to town. None put up a fuss with his current plans.
A&B Cleaning, Iola, was hired to give the old Gas School, now the city’s community center, a thorough cleaning, including stripping and power washing of floors throughout and application of wax or sealant. A&B’s bid of $3,198.06 was about half as much as a second bid.
City Superintendent Steve Robb said a new metal roof on the building, installed by the city crew, was nearly complete, and functioned well during recent heavy rainfall.
Council members agreed to sell Wayne Barnett, Iola, two lots on the south side of town for $1,000 each, as soon as a true survey was made and a contract drawn up.
City Clerk Rhonda Hill reminded residents that calls to report trash, including brush and small limbs, to be hauled during the town’s spring cleanup next week must be received in her office by Friday’s closing time. The office number is 365-3034.
“We’ve had 14 requests so far,” Hill said.
