Alberta C. Stockebrand, 97, Yates Center, passed away early Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola.

Alberta was born Oct. 17, 1920, in Humboldt, one of the eight children of Oscar Ray and Arzella (Todd) Coltrane.

She spent her childhood in various locations in Allen County. Following school she lived in Iola and worked as a nurse at the McAtee House which later became the Allen County Hospital where she remained employed. During World War II she spent nine months in California as a cook at an Air Force Base.

On Feb. 17, 1946, she and Milton Edward Stockebrand were married at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Yates Center. They became the parents of six children.

They rented a farm in Allen County until moving to their farm near Yates Center in 1951. Besides being a farm wife and homemaker Alberta continued working as a nurse in Iola. She enjoyed taking care of her garden and yard and sewing clothes for her children. She and Milton retired in 1980 and moved into Yates Center. Alberta continued her nursing for a few years at the Yates Center Health Center. She and Milton enjoyed traveling in their retirement years. They enjoyed spending time with their family, especially their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alberta was a long-time faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Yates Center serving in many capacities over the years. She also was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Her husband, Milton, preceded her in death on August 24, 2002, following more than 56 years of marriage. She suffered the loss of her daughter, Yvonne Ireland, in 2004, and her son, Raymond Stockebrand, in 2016. She also was preceded by her seven brothers and sisters, Ula Stuteville, Elvira Roush, Lloyd Coltrane, Lois Stuteville, Evelyn Wood, Helen Coltrane and Ivan Coltrane.

She leaves her children, Martha Brotherton and husband Ron, Paola, Jim Stockebrand and wife Barbara, Yates Center, Karen Faulkner and husband Wayne, Yates Center, and Kent Stockebrand, Yates Center; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Bill Ireland, Yates Center; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Stockebrand, Halstead; numerous nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday,  at the Yates Center United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Yates Center Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Mrs. Stockebrand will lie in state from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center. There will be no visitation Monday evening.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Yates Center United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
