James S. McGowan Sr., 75, of Iola died Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
He was born May 20, 1934, in Iola, the son of Raymond P. and Jane Helen (Atkins) McGowan. He grew up in Iola.
After serving a year with the Kansas National Guard he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served for 21 years. After retiring from the military, he worked for Dow Chemical in Freeport, Texas, and then for several years in the commissary at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. He returned to Iola to make his home in 2002. He was married to Patsy Weeks in 1992.
He was a member of the Iola American Legion and LaHarpe Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife; a son, James S. Jr., Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Pamela Genzer, Springfield, Mo.; and a sister, Ramona Farmer, Augusta.
Two brothers, Albert and Alfred, died earlier.
Cremation has taken place.
Family services will be held at a later date.
