John Upton
John L. Upton, 86, of Stockton, Mo., formerly of Kansas City, died from cancer Wednesday, March 3, 2010.
He was born Dec. 2, 1923, near Bronson to John James and Della Lora (Gillham) Upton.
On Jan. 29, 1946, he married Veta Joan Powers of Kincaid. In 1952, they moved to Kansas City where they raised four children.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the European Theater as a member of the 747th Tank Battalion. He was honorably discharged as staff sergeant, earning three ribbons and four Bronze Stars. He was a 50-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 101.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, John and his wife, Nancy, Kansas City, Allen and his wife, Colleen, Lawson, Mo., and Max and his wife, Debbie, Independence, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Elmer and Roy, a sister, Edith Stover, and a daughter, JoLynn Zuber of Stockton, Mo., died earlier.
Services will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Mildred.
