Lois M. Slagel, 84, passed away Friday, April 17, 2015, at her home in Le Roy.
She was born June 28, 1930, in Le Roy, the daughter of Pearl E. and Emma A. Read Richards.
Lois graduated from Le Roy High School with the Class of 1949 where she was crowned homecoming queen her senior year.
Lois was forever joined in marriage to Raymond Slagel on Dec. 18, 1949, in Emporia. They treasured over 49 years together until Raymond’s death on Aug. 15, 1998.
During the younger years of her life Lois worked as a telephone operator in Arkansas City.
She went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk and retired as the Le Roy postmaster after 30 years of service.
Lois took great pride in being active in First Christian Church of Le Roy where she taught Sunday School for many years. Her numerous memberships included, 53 years of membership to the Leroy Order of The Eastern Star No. 83, 60 years with the Rebekah Lodge, 14 years with the Neosho Valley E.H.U., Fireman’s Auxiliary and a lifetime membership to the American Legion Auxiliary. Lois had also served on the board of the Senior Center and dedicated 15 years working in local elections.
She will remain dear to the hearts of her daughter, Catherine Ann Newkirk and husband Randy of Le Roy; four grandchildren, Samantha Burgett, Eric Newkirk, Newell Newkirk (Whitney), Veronica Newkirk (Jacob); six great-grandchildren, Rollyn Burgett, Roudy Earlywine, Austin Newkirk, Laura Newkirk, Layla Newkirk, and Dominik Newkirk; Lois was preceded in death by a son, Lester Slagel; two sisters, Virginia Meyer and Betty Jean Henry; five brothers, Bob, Jim, Rex, Bill and Babe Richards.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of Le Roy.
Burial will follow services at Le Roy Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church of Le Roy or Coffey County Cancer Support and sent in care of the VanArsdale Funeral Home at P.O. Box No. 8, Le Roy, KS 66857.
