For men’s coach Doug Desmarteau, it had been 17 days. For women’s soccer coach Jeremy McGinnis, it had been 18 days.
Both the men’s and women’s soccer coaches for Allen Community College entered Wednesday starving for a conference win. Each of them had waited more than two weeks to pick up a league victory and home matchups against Johnson County Community College gave them the chance to find the win column once again.
Neither did.
The men led 2-0 over the Cavaliers as late as 85 minutes into the 90-minute contest. But Allen’s defense collapsed down the stretch, surrendering four goals in the game’s final five minutes to lose 4-2.
The women’s matchup was never really in doubt. Johnson County notched four goals in the first half alone and added two more after the break to defeat Allen 6-0.
Each loss comes at a critical time in the season with both the men and women attempting to stay alive in the playoff hunt.
But Desmarteau’s Red Devils have now lost three straight Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference games, leaving them 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Currently, the men are in 10th place out of 11 conference teams. The top eight make the playoffs.
As for McGinnis’ Lady Red Devils, they are tied for eighth place with Coffeyville after dropping to 6-7 on the year and 2-4 in conference play.
Both of Allen’s teams will travel to Cowley Community College on Saturday to once again search for that elusive league victory. The women play at 1 p.m. and the men follow that contest with their own at 3 p.m.
