The Mustangs and Fillies held down the fort on Tuesday as they hosted the Doc Stiles Cross Country Meet and won three out of four races.
Iola took first in the boys varsity and girls junior varsity and varsity.
In the boys varsity race, four of the top five runners were Mustangs included the top three.
Freshman Jack Adams took first with a time of 18:55, Cole Regehr took second (19:23). Nathan Louk was third (19:29), and Elijah Fawson took fifth (21:14).
“We held the first four places in the boys race for a mile, but a Nevada runner broke up the streak, though he  could not get Louk and Regehr,” head coach Marv Smith said.  “Not sure what Jack’s time might have been if he had been chasing someone. He was in complete control and appeared to be coasting a little, enjoying his number-one spot.”
The girls just missed out on first place when a Nevada runner just beat out Elka Billings who finished second with a time of 21:43.
Kelsey Morrison finished fourth (22:53), Rachel Bycroft finished sixth (23:26), Audrey Coltrane came in 11th (24:55) and Lorie Carpenter finished 13th (25:03).
“Our girls’ times are really improving,” Smith said. “Elka and Kelsey went to the front immediately as is their nature. Rachel was OK after the first mile, but she really picked it up during the rest of the race. Audrey and Lorie are bringing their times down and their faces exhibit the intensity they put into the race.  Nevada’s No. 1 girl is one of the top in Missouri but she could not shake Elka. These times are very good for our first five.”
The junior varsity girls were just as dominant as anyone. Three of the top five and four of the top 10 were Fillies.
Marta Gonzalez finished second with a time of 25:48. Nora Gostner finished third (25:49), Kylee Maloney finished fourth (27:06), Ella Taylor finished eighth (28:29) and Callie Murcko finished 11th (28:55).
The junior varsity boys missed out on second place by just 10 points and were without two of their top runners (Tavon Best and Cal Leonard) who were out with injuries.
Riley Jay finished third with a time of 21:09. Nathan Sprague finished seventh (22:17) and Blake Haar finished 13th (22:32).
For the middle school, the seventh grade race ran into some issues with the course which led to times and places being unofficial but the 8th graders did have places and times.
Brett Morrison finished second overall for the boys with a time of 13:53. Drake Delatorre finished fifth 14:24.8, Collin Long finished 11th (15:04) and Nick Karns finished 22nd (21:09).
For the 8th grade girls, two Ponies took the top two spots as Ursula Billings (15:01) took first and Josie Plumlee (15:18) took second. Natalie Fees  finished 8th (16:35), Emily Long finished 12th (17:45) and Jorja Murcko finished 15th (19:15).
The high schoolers will be back out and running on Saturday at the Rim Rock meet in Lawrence while the Middle Schoolers will head to Central Heights next Thursday.
