Humboldt answered with six runs in the first inning, two in the second and seven in the third. Zach Vanatta led the team with his bat, hitting three singles for three RBIs. Pitcher Rayce Hoepker found himself in a sticky situation in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases with walks and zero outs, Hoepker was able to subdue any damage. A groundball was fielded cleanly by Siemens, who threw out the runner going for home. Hoepker then fielded a grounder hit to him at the mound, threw it to the catcher Allen for the second out, who threw it to Carpenter at first base for the inning-ending double play.
Hoepker finished the game with four innings pitched, giving up one earned run, striking out two and walking five. Daylon Splane came in for the fifth and struck out one during the 1-2-3 inning.
In game two, Humboldt won 13-3.
Dalton Brittain had Yates Center’s only hit in the game. Rossillon, Ryan Moffett and Dakota Renfro each had an RBI.
Humboldt scored in each inning, including two runs in each of the first three innings and a seven-run fourth.
Carpenter led the team with four hits, including three singles and a double for four RBIs. Smith hit two singles and had two RBIs. Vanatta didn’t have a hit, but did get two RBIs. Haviland had a single, double and RBI. Siemens had a single and RBI. Korte had a single, triple and RBI. Hoepker had a single and double.
Devin Davidson started the game, but was quickly relieved by Splane after one out in the first. Tyler Korte pitched an inning.
“It was nice to have some new pitchers be able to get some innings for us tonight,” coach Mike Miller said. “With six games this week, we really needed some guys to eat some innings. Rayce and Daylon did just that. Daylon was pitching for the first time at the varsity level and I was really impressed with his performance.”
Humboldt (6-2) travels to Erie today for a make-up doubleheader. The team hosts a tournament on Friday starting at noon.
