HUMBOLDT — While lacking the flash they’d shown in earlier victories, Humboldt High’s boys continued on the winning path Friday.
The Cubs overcame a cold start to dispatch Erie, 46-28, in the final round of the Humboldt’s preseason tournament. Humboldt went 3-0 in tournament play and is 3-1 overall.
“We probably played better than I thought,” Cub head coach David Taylor said. “We weren’t real crisp, and we missed a lot of free throws.”
The Cubs trailed 9-5 after one quarter before outscoring Erie 18-4 in the second quarter to lead 23-14.
“We defended pretty well, especially with our on-ball defense,” Taylor said. “Anytime you can hold a team under 30, you’re giving yourself a good chance to win.”
Humboldt won despite shooting a frigid 12 of 26 from the line.
Senior guard Kason Siemens hit several shots down the stretch, Taylor said, to keep the Red Devils at bay.
“It was good to see him have a strong game,” Taylor said. “Jake Haviland and Rhett Smith both came off the bench and did good things for us. Markiz Pullliam had a strong game as well.”
Pulliam paced the Cubs with 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Meins drained three 3-pointers en route to 14 points. Haviland added four rebounds. Justin Meins had four rebounds, four assists, and he drew two charges. Smith chipped in with eight points.
Tyler Stephens scored nine to pace Erie.

IN OTHER tournament action Friday, Crest High’s Lancers picked up their first win of the season, toppling Uniontown, 54-44.
“We were happy with how we played Thursday, but there comes a point you just need to win,” Crest head coach Travis Hermreck said. “We had a lot of tired legs and sick kids. I was happy because of the fact that we played hard again today.”
The Lancers took control in the second quarter. Austin Green scored eight points in the period, while Hunter Frazell scored seven. Crest turned a 12-11 deficit into a 30-23 lead at the break.
Uniontown clawed back to within 44-41 with about four minutes left in the contest, thanks to a pair of untimely Lancer turnovers.
Hermreck’s timeout settled things. Deft passing on consecutive possessions led to Evan Godderz field goals and a 4841 advantage. Frazell’s steal and free throws pushed the lead to 50-41 moments later.
“It wasn’t that obvious, but when Gage Adams came in and picked up four big rebounds in the second quarter, that allowed us to get our offense started early,” Hermreck said. “We got contributions up and down today. I’m pretty dang happy about that.
“We’re not physically the type of team that’s going to line up beat a team like Uniontown without winning some of the intangibles.”
Green and Frazell shared high-scoring honors with 14 points each. Godderz was close behind with 13.
Garred Elder scored 12 and Colt Sutterby 10 for Uniontown.

The Cubs started out Thursday’s tilt in much the same manner as their first two games of the season — on fire.
But after racing to a 21-4 lead after one quarter, Humboldt’s momentum evaporated.
The Cubs led 35-22 at the break before the Lancers made things interesting with a 13-5 run in the third quarter.
But Humboldt maintained its double-digit advantage down the stretch as the pace slowed for both teams.
“We started out well, but I thought we deviated from what we’d done to be successful after that,” Humboldt head  Taylor said. “A lot of that is attributable to how hard Travis had his kids playing. They made things happen.”
Despite the loss, Hermreck was encouraged.
“We haven’t faced a defense like we did in the first quarter,” Hermreck said. “To say we were shell-shocked continued. “Once you get full effort you can focus on coaching and getting better.”
Justin Meins led the way for Humboldt with 14 points, six assists and three steals. Ethan Bartlett chipped in with 10 points, four steals and three rebounds. Pulliam added nine points and three boards. Robbie Sellman also had three rebounds.
Brallier’s 13 points paced the Lancers. Frazell and Godderz added nine points each.
Humboldt knocked off Crest, 55-19, in the junior varsity game. Tyler Korte and Rayce Hoepker each had 11 points to lead the Cubs JV.
