The Fillies junior varsity volleyball squad had their way with every team they faced in the Iola Junior Varsity Invitational — except for one team.
That team was their rival from just down the road in Humboldt. The Cubs beat the Fillies twice, winning 26-24, 25-17 in straight sets in their first matchup.
In the second matchup, Iola was able to take a set off of Humboldt, by winning the second set 25-20 after Humboldt took the first set 25-17.
The Cubs took the match though, by winning the third set 15-8.
Iola made quick work of its other three opponents in the tournament by beating each of Prairie View, Girard and Central Heights in straight sets.
Central Heights was the Fillies first opponent of the day. Mia Aronson and Karley McGuffin led the way with three kills apiece and Iola won 25-13, 27-25.
Against Girard, McGuffin again played a big role with a pair of kills. Shaylee Sutterby also had two kills to share the team lead. Iola rolled to a 25-13, 25-18 victory.
Prairie View was no match for the Fillies either. Sutterby and Aronson each had four kills and the Fillies won 25-21, 25-12.
Paige Burrough was a weapon throughout the day for Iola. In Iola’s three victories, Burrough tallied 23 total aces.
