GIRARD — After a sluggish first half, the Iola High Fillies came out strong in the second for a hard fought, 40-35 win.
“We just got a little flustered the first half, but we made some good adjustments at halftime,” Iola coach Becky Carlson said. “We moved the post up and moved Girard’s big girl out of the lane. We did a good job. The girls shot better in the second half.”
The Fillies started off the game leading 5-2. Emma Piazza made a long jump shot to start the scoring and Addie Haar made a free throw. Sydney Wade found Haar near the free throw line for an open jumper.
However, Iola trailed 8-7 by the end of the quarter. The Fillies gave up three turnovers that led to easy transition  baskets.
The second quarter was more of the same. Iola’s only basket came from another Wade-to-Haar transaction with 4:35 left in the half. Girard ended the half on a 6-0 run and took a 16-9 lead into halftime.
The Fillies didn’t have a hard time scoring in the second half. Wade started things off with a quick 3-pointer with 7:30 left. After a Girard basket, Wade found Piazza wide open for a jumper. Iola trailed 18-14 with 5:45 left in the third.
Later in the quarter, Mikaela Platt stole the ball on the inbound pass. She passed the ball to Wade, who dished it to Jo Lohman for the easy bucket to tie the game at 18-18..
Iola fell behind again. The Trojans’ 7-2 run pushed Girard up 25-20 after three.
Wade, again, started the quarter off with a 3-pointer, to pull the Fillies to within two.
“(Wade’s) second half was really good,” Carlson said. “She’s a great passer and had some 3s, she did a good job for us.”
Wade then showed off her passing skills with another assist. She fed Platt for an easy inside shot to tie the score at 25-25 with 6:55 left.
Three minutes later, Lohman grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for the 27-25 lead. With 1:20 left, Haar found Wade for an easy basket and gave Iola a 31-28 lead.
Free throws helped the Fillies finish off the win. Wade, Piazza and Emery Driskel made 9 of 10 free throws to end the game. Wade scored six of those.
Wade led the Fillies with 14 points, Piazza had nine, Haar scored seven, Lohman scored six, Platt scored two and Driskel scored two. Lohman led the team with 10 rebounds; Driskel had seven.
Iola (1-0) starts off the Anderson County Tournament against Chanute at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Carlson said she want the team to get up and down the floor better on defense.
“We ended up doing good, but we didn’t take care of the ball as well as I thought we should have in the first half. In the second half we did a good job. We controlled it and attacked.”

THE FILLIES WON the junior varsity matchup, 35-24. Riley Murry scored nine points and Toni Macha had seven. Colbi Riley chipped in with five.
