For the second time this season, the Wellsville Lady Eagles’ high-powered offense and suffocating press proved too much for the Iola girls in the Fillies’ 69-43 home loss on Wednesday.
The first matchup between the two teams was a 66-31 blowout in January spurred in part by a big opening run that put the Fillies in a deep hole. Wednesday was more of the same as the Lady Eagles opened up the game on a 12-1 start, hitting three early threes and getting whatever else they wanted on the offensive end.
“They can really shoot the ball,” head coach Becky Carlson said. “When you get too far out on them they drive to the rim and when you don’t they shoot a three.”
But unlike the first matchup, the Fillies had an answer, ending the quarter on a 7-2 run to only trail by six after the first quarter. Junior Ellie Carson got the Fillies going by driving to the rim scoring six of her team-high 15 in that quarter.
Unfortunately, that’s when Wellsville’s press went to work.
A 15-1 run built on the back on transition buckets and points off turnovers pushed the Wellsville lead to 20, 31-11.
“That’s the difference in the game,” Carlson said. “Once we got the ball past half court we did alright but it getting the ball past their press that kept tripping us up. We did a lot better against it this time than we did last time.”
Iola managed to cut the Lady Eagles lead to as little as 16 in the third quarter but they just couldn’t get much else going as Wellsville kept their attack steady.
The loss moves the Fillies to 7-12 and 5-5 in Pioneer League play. The Fillies will play their final regular season game tonight, weather permitting, at Santa Fe Trail before heading into sub-state play at the end of next week.
The Fillies lost at home to Santa Fe Trail just a few weeks ago in a game where they led for the majority and led their lead slip late in the fourth quarter.
“It would be great to get that win and have a little momentum heading into sub-state,” Carlson said. “Tonight, aside from the press break, we had a pretty good game but we don’t want to be satisfied. We want to win one.”
Freshmen Results
The Fillie freshmen beat Wellsville 36-18. Hannah Gardner had 14 points and Lauryn Holloway had nine points.
