CHANUTE — Iola High’s girl’s varsity tennis team had its first match of the season against Neodesha, Labette, Columbus and Chanute Thursday afternoon.
No. 1 singles player Bobbi Sinclair lost to Neodesha’s Emily Depew, 8-0, and Chanute’s Abby Liudahl, 8-1. Sinclair defeated Labette’s Emily McCoach, 8-5, and Columbus’ tennis player, 8-0.
No. 2 singles player Chyanne Vaughn had two wins and two losses as well. She lost to Labette’s Haley Page, 8-7, and Chanute’s Shelby Stair, 8-1. Vaughn beat out Neodesha’s Taylor Eustice, 8-4, and Columbus’ opponent, 8-0.
“This was Bobbi’s first match playing singles,” coach Jenn Bycroft said. “This was also Chyanne’s first time playing singles at the varsity level. I was extremely impressed with their level of play and determination all day. They were consistent with their shots, and all of their games had very long points. They did well.”
For Iola’s doubles teams, the No. 1 team of Shelby Reno and Allyson Hobbs had one win. They lost to Neodesha, 8-6, Labette County, 8-3, and Chanute, 9-0. The pair beat Columbus, 8-2.
“Shelby and Allyson had some great shots,” Bycroft said. “They communicate well and are moving better on the court. They fought hard in that first match, I thought they might pull out the win.”
The No. 2 doubles pair Baleigh Seeber and Tori Smith had one win as well. The pair defeated Neodesha, 8-1. The team lost to Labette, 8-4, Columbus, 8-4, and Chanute, 8-0.
“This was the first varsity match for both Baleigh and Tori,” Bycroft said. “They played so well tonight. It was great to see them communicating out there on the court. They had some awesome shots at the net.”
Iola next plays at 3 p.m. Thursday in the team’s lone home match of the year. They will face Parsons, Independence and Columbus.
“Of course we have a lot of work to do to get better,” Bycroft said. “But, overall I was really proud of my team for their efforts and great attitudes tonight.”
