GARNETT — Coach Terri Carlin and her A, B and C eighth-grade volleyball teams faced off against the Anderson County Bulldogs on Tuesday night.
The A team, which is the only one that plays in a best of five contest, lost 3-1. It was the first time this season that the Ponies played in four consecutive sets.
The Bulldogs took the first set 25-22 before the Ponies bounced right back to win the second, 25-21. Although Iola dropped its next two sets to lose the game, Carlin said she was still pleased with her team’s performance.
“We did a super job in the first three sets,” Carlin said. “I think we were worn out by the fourth set.”
Allie Utley was the Ponies leading server with eight aces in the loss. Haley Carlin added five service aces of her own while also racking up four assists and two kills.
Jill Keller, Caleigh Porter and Raylea Wilson all had one kill each.
Sadrie Overall not only had two kills, but she also was one of Iola’s strongest defenders in the back row.
“Sadrie Overall did great moving and getting to balls,” Carlin said. “Nothing hits the floor if Sadrie is near it.”
Although the A team was unable to pull out a win against Anderson County, both the B and C teams picked up victories.
Torre DePriest and Breanna Northcutt led the B team to a win in three sets (25-20, 20-25, 15-12).
DePriest had three assists, all to Northcutt.
Kristin Lamb and Sierra Petty each had three service aces. Marisa VanHouden, Meadow Swayze and Carlie Payne each had one kill.
Finally, the C team closed out the night with a 2-1 win (25-21, 18-25, 15-13).
Swayze was the Ponies’ most efficient player from behind the service line, recording a team-high nine service aces. Swayze’s serving effort came through in the clutch as well.
Down 13-11 in the third and final set of the game, Swayze served four straight aces to seal the comeback victory.
“Meadow has been working really hard on her serve and she really came through for us,” Carlin said.
Zavi Evans also helped boost Iola toward a win with her three service aces and two kills.
The Ponies host Independence at home today starting at 3:30 p.m.
