Vince Coons, the only softball coach Iola High has had in the program’s 11-year history, has been suspended from his coaching duties, and will not be at the helm when the Fillies hit the diamond today to start their 2015 season.
In his stead, is IHS ninth- and 10-grade counselor Melissa Stiffler.
Neither USD 257 Supt. of Schools Jack Koehn nor Athletics Director Martin Bambick would comment.
The suspension was handed down by Koehn prior to a special USD 257 school board meeting Friday afternoon, apparently for board members to discuss the matter.
The board did not take action.
Coons, who remains employed as a science instructor at IHS, also declined comment, referring any questions to Bambick.
Stiffler has coaching experience. She coached softball in Missouri for 13 years before coming to IHS, Bambick said.
Attempts to reach Stiffler were unsuccessful.
