GARNETT — Finishing 2-2 on the day, Iola High’s volleyball team couldn’t get out of pool play at the Anderson County Invitational Saturday afternoon.
“We started off the day extremely slowly,” coach Emily Sigg said. “This was very disappointing because it wasn’t an early morning match and we had plenty of time to wake up to be prepared.”
The Fillies started the day out with a two-set loss to host Anderson County, 25-14 and 25-19. Emery Driskel led the team with six kills. Emma Piazza had seven assists and a kill. Kyra Moore had five kills and four aces. Addie Haar had the only ace for Iola and four kills. Ashlie Shields had two kills. Mikaela Platt and Sydney Wade each had a kill. Toni Macha had the Fillies only dig.
Iola came back with a 25-17 and 25-18 victory over Prairie View. Shields led with three of the Fillies’ eight aces and a kill. Piazza had four kills, two aces and eight assists. Moore had an ace, two kills and three assists. Platt had three kills and Haar had a kill.
“By our third match, we woke up and played very well against Wellsville,” Sigg said.
The Eagles came out on top in a three-set match. Driskel had 11 kills to lead the Fillies, along with an ace. Piazza had 12 assists, two kills and an ace. Haar had eight kills. Moore had three kills and nine assists. Wade had a kill and assist, while Shields had a kill.
The Fillies ended the day with a 25-18 and 25-14 win against Labette County. The win put Iola in fifth place for the tournament.
“There was a lot of good competition there, I just wish we would’ve played to our potential,” Sigg said. “We could’ve continued into bracket play.”
The Fillies travel to Anderson County again Tuesday for its final regular season match. Iola hosts a Class 4A-II Substate tournament Saturday.
“I’m glad we have two more league matches on Tuesday, before we prepare for substate,” Sigg said.
