ALTAMONT — Iola High’s wrestling team had a great day individually, despite losing to both Labette County and Erie on Thursday night.
“Overall, we won five of the six matches we wrestled,” coach Jason Bates said. “For the matches that we took part in, the Mustangs earned 25 team points and only allowed six points against us.”
Against Labette, Iola lost as a team 24-18. However, the Mustangs won all the matches they took part in. Andrew Garber and Seth Sanford each won by pinning their opponents in the first period.
Tavon Blazek won his junior varsity match by injury default. He was up 13-3 at the time, when he connected on a blast double. That knocked the wind out of his opponent, who didn’t return.
Iola lost to Erie 42-13, despite winning three of the four matches in which team wrestlers participated. Garber won his match in a 5-3 decision, Blazek won by a 14-2 major decision and Sanford won by pinning his opponent in the first period.
Colton Toney lost his match to Trey Colborn by fall over. Colborn is ranked the no. 2 wrestler in the 3-2-1a class by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.
“It would be nice to know what our dual record would be now, if we had a full team,” Bates said. “The young men keep improving every time that we wrestle. I’m proud of the work they do in the practice room.”
Iola goes to Columbus for matches on Tuesday.
