The Iola Middle School girls basketball team ran into some trouble on Tuesday on the road versus Prairie View. All four Pony teams fell to the Buffalos in a rough offensive night in which none of the teams scored more than 14 points.
The seventh-grade junior varsity lost 14-10.
Prairie View jumped out to an early 12-0 lead in the first quarter and held that lead through a scoreless second quarter. The Ponies continued to hold the Buffalos scoreless in the third quarter while scoring their first four points and tacked on six more in the fourth quarter to make a comeback bid. Prairie View got a final basket to keep their lead at four to close it out.
Carly Dreher had a team-high four points and Caiden Cloud, Dallyn McGraw and Celina Caron each had two points. Dreher also led the team in rebounds with four and Caron led the team in steals with three.
The seventh-grade varsity had an even harder time, falling 32-6.
The Buffalos had a 12-0 first quarter just like in the junior varsity game but that would not be all. Prairie View kept Iola scoreless in the second quarter while adding six more points to make their lead 18-0 at the half. The Ponies came alive a little bit in the third quarter scoring six points but the defense gave up 14 points. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Asha Houk led the way with four points while Cali Riley had two points to round out the Ponies scorers. Jadyn Kauffman had a team-high six rebounds and Caron and Houk each had two steals. Houk also had two blocks.
A rough second quarter for the eighth-grade junior varsity ruined the Ponies shot a win. Prairie View won 27-11.
Both teams came out of the gate even, scoring six points each in the first quarter. A 14-1 second quarter for the Buffalos wiped the Ponies out as both teams headed into the half with Prairie View leading 20-7. The Buffalos added another seven points in the third quarter while Iola scored four. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Maci Miller scored a team-high six points followed by Triniti Loveall who had three. Miah Shelby scored two points. Miller also led her team in rebounds with four and steals with two along with Hannah Hall. Loveall and Shelby each had a block.
Unlike the three previous games, the eighth-grade varsity had the game in their grasp throughout the first half but the second half was where Prairie View broke away.
The Buffalos had a strong opening, scoring eight points in the first quarter while holding Iola to just two. The Pony defense stepped up in the second and held Prairie View to just two points while scoring four to get within four at halftime, 10-6. 13 unanswered points by the Buffalos in the third quarter put the Ponies away. Iola outscored Prairie View 8-2 in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 11.
Reece Murry had five points in the loss followed by four for Chloe Sell, three for Jenna Curry and two for Hannah Hall. Murry had a team-high eight rebounds while Sell had six. Murry also had two steals.
The Ponies will return home on Thursday to take on Osawatomie at 4 p.m.
