Allen County Community College’s Red Devil women had a tough go of it at home Thursday night. Coffeyville Community College’s Red Ravens decked the Red Devils 75-50.
“Overall, we didn’t play bad. We just couldn’t rebound at all,” said Sacha Santimano, ACCC women’s head coach. “We would play solid defense then give up an offensive rebound.”
Coffeyville got 13 points off second-chance shots. It got 17 points off 16 Allen County turnovers.
The big number though was 29 points at the free-throw line for the Red Ravens. They were 29 of 36 while the Red Devils went 8 of 14 at the line.
“When your opponent shoots 33 more free throws than you and gets 29 points from the line, you can’t be very successful,” Santimano said.
Coffeyville pushed out to a 35-24 halftime lead. Not bad.
Santimano continued to commend the Red Devil players for their effort. “We do work hard. We just cannot rebound.
“If we could have just given (Coffeyville) one shot and done per possession, we would have been able to keep it close and put us in place to be in the game.”
Coffeyville outscored Allen County 40-26 in the second half.
Rackell Goldson scored 14 points and controlled seven rebounds for ACCC. Nicole Swick had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Red Devils shot 34 percent, 20 of 59, from the field. Coffeyville was 22 of 70 for 31 percent.
Queona Walker handed out six assists for Allen County. Danielle Best had two steals.
Tiana Cannon paced Coffeyville (10-3, 16-9) with 27 points. McKenna Britton added 14 points and Ondrea Shaw had 12 points.
Allen County dropped to 1-12 in Jayhawk Eastern Division play, losing its third straight. It is 3-21 overall.
The Red Devils travel to Overland Park Saturday to play NJCAA Division II second-ranked Johnson County Community College (9-4, 21-4). Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
