The Allen Community College Red Devils seem to be snake-bitten lately in close matches.
After falling in five sets to Hesston College on Saturday, the Red Devils tried to right the ship at home against Labette County Community College, but unfortunately the tough luck continued for Allen.
Labette County was able to steal the first set out from under the Red Devils 30-28, but Allen was able to quickly respond.
The Red Devils grabbed victories in the second and third sets by margins of 25-23 and 25-20.
On several opportunities, the Red Devils were even able to take control late in the fourth set to nearly wrap up the match on serve, but each time Labette fought back and eventually won the fourth set 31-29.
Allen again jumped in front in the fifth set by building a quick 4-1 lead in the first-to-15 set.
Labette County roared back with its strong service game and took a 6-4 lead with Janae Barnes serving.
Allen quickly answered and tied the game at six.
Labette County rattled off three straight points, before Allen’s Caitlin McDougald cut  the lead down to 9-7 with a big kill.
Labette’s Ashlynn Robbins put her team back in control with a three-point run serving and even though Allen fought back late, Labette was able to take the match with a 15-11 fifth-set victory.
Allen sophomore Andi Dowell led the Allen attack with 17 kills in the match. Caitlin McDougald added 14 kills while Leah Hiebert notched 13.
Joely Roe had a team-high 38 digs and Sami Cloe ran the Red Devil offense with 28 assists and Adanna York added 22.
