ARGONIA — A large first quarter deficit was too much to overcome in Southern Coffey County’s 84-40 loss to no. 4 ranked Argonia-Attica in the first round of the playoffs Tuesday night.
“We let the nerves get the best of us early,” coach Korey Lankton said. “We mishandled a snap on 3rd and short on our first possession and had to punt, then fumbled the ball to them on our next two possessions giving them short field position and digging ourselves a 24-0 hole. That’s something you just can’t do to an explosive team like them. Once we settled down, we played pretty even with them from that point on until the middle of the fourth quarter.”
The Titans found themselves in a 24-0 hole with 1:33 left in the first quarter. Hunter Pankey got SCC on the board with an 11-yard touchdown run. Argonia added one more touchdown before the first quarter ended extending their lead to 32-6.
Ten seconds into the second quarter, Walker Harred connected with Chonnor Ludolph for a 61-yard touchdown. Argonia answered right back with a 30-yard touchdown pass to take a 38-12 lead into halftime.
Argonia scored two more times to open up the third quarter and take a 50-12 lead. SCC’s Harred broke free for a 55-yard score and Jordan Edwards ran in the two-point conversion. Again, Harred added another score, this time on a 6-yard run. Argonia’s lead was down to 50-26 with 7:05 left in the third quarter.
But, Argonia’s offense continued to attack the Southern Coffey defense and scored two more times before Josiah Witteman caught a 50-yard pass from Harred. After the two-point conversion, SCC trailed 64-34 going into the fourth quarter.
With the game well at hand, Nick Spencer hit Witteman for a 24-yard touchdown — the Titan’s last score of the season. Argonia scored three more times in the quarter to win 84-40.
“I am really happy for these seniors, to have had the opportunity to get into the playoffs, and then compete well against a solid team,” Lankton said. “They have some great memories now, but what I’m the most proud of is the resilience to never give up. They took some shots from some really good teams the last few years and always came back with their heads up and great attitudes. It’s exactly how they played last night.”
The Southern Coffey offense held their own against Argonia. SCC had 429 total yards, which included 300 rushing yards and 129 passing yards. Argonia had 436 offensive yards, with 154 passing yards and 282 rushing yards.
Harred led the team with 162 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Pankey rushed for 78 yards and also scored two rushing touchdowns. Michael Hill had two carries for 36 yards, Adam Willard had a 15-yard rush and Ludolph had a 10-yard rush.
Harred also led the team with 58 passing yards completing 2-for-8 passes. He threw one touchdown and an interception. Spencer completed 1-for-4 passes for a 24-yard touchdown. Ludolph threw one pass for 30 yards and Pankey completed two passes for 15 yards.
Witteman caught four passes for a team-leading 117 yards. Ludoph had one catch for eight yards and Hill had a catch for two yards.
One key difference in the game came down to turnovers. SCC had three turnovers — two fumbles and an interception — compared to none by Argonia.
“They took Argonia-Attica’s shots early and could have gave in, but they ‘fought’ back,” Lankton said. “That’s what you do in life. When adversity hits, you take the hit without excuses and pointing fingers, and fight back and move forward. These kids will do well in life.”
