FREDONIA — Local golfers were greeted with fair skies and gentle breezes for their golf meet in Fredonia on Tuesday.
“We had a beautiful day to play, but the competition was stiff,” Yates Center coach Kevin Barnes said.
Humboldt sophomore Ryan Sellman led the way for the local golfers from Humboldt and Yates Center by finishing fifth in the tournament with an 81 after sizzling on the front nine with a 38.
“Ryan didn’t shoot his best today, but still had a nice result,” Humboldt coach Eric Sparks said. “He was right there with the leader after the front nine, but struggled to keep pace on the back nine.”
Sellman finished eight shots off the lead. Drake Hottenstein shot a 117 and Roni Bulk shot a 123.
“They both are getting better and improving their play with each meet,” Sparks said. “We just have to be a little more consistent with our shots, especially our short game.”
For Yates Center, Reece Solander was the team’s top finisher by shooting an 84 to finish in 10th place.
“Reece played pretty well, but found the rough on several holes,” Barnes said.
Jon Barnes finished in a tie for 28th and James Hess finished in 40th place.
“Jon and James had some decent holes, but went into too many ponds,” Barnes said.
