BURLINGTON — A few too many defensive lulls in a bruising battle cost Iola High’s Fillies Friday.
“When we settled down and ran our offense we had some good looks,” Carlson said. “But, their pressing sped us up and we were a bit scattered tonight.”
Iola gave up extended runs to Burlington High on three occasions, the third of which proved too much to overcome in a 58-45 defeat.
The loss drops Iola into the seventh-place game of the Burlington Midseason Tournament. Iola takes on Santa Fe Trail today at noon at the Burlington Middle School gymnasium.
Burlington seized the upper hand early, courtesy of a 14-4 run spanning the first and second quarters.
Sydni Emling’s basket gave the Wildcats a 14-6 lead early in the second quarter.
Iola rallied to take the lead, briefly, with an 8-0 run, highlighted by an Emma Piazza 3-pointer, three free throws by Sidney Wade and a Lexie Long jumper.
Emling and Regan Norton responded with baskets to re-establish a 20-18 lead. Malorie Wagner’s buzzer-beater gave the Wildcats a 22-19 halftime lead.
Emling drained a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter to key a 10-3 Burlington run, to push the lead to 35-24.
Addie Haar connected on a pair of baskets to cut the Wildcat lead to seven and Sidney Wade’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 41-35 with 6:27 left in the game. Addie Haar’s putback a while later sliced the deficit to five, 45-40.
Iola got no closer. With about four minutes left, the Fillies had to foul to slow the game down.
“They were ahead and had that lead. So, we had to start fouling,” Carlson said. “Then, either you’re going to get the ball back or they’re going to score easy. They scored easy.”
The Wildcats hit 7 of 11 free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win.
Wade and Piazza shared high-scoring honors for the Fillies with 11 points each. Haar and Toni Macha added eight each. In a statistical oddity, Macha scored eight of Iola’s first 10 points, then none the rest of the game.
Norton and Emling led Burlington with 16 points each. Wagner followed with 13.
