YATES CENTER — Yates Center High’s track team gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about Tuesday, racking up 10 gold medals in its only home meet of the season.
“It was a very good day for everyone,” Yates Center head coach Dan Berg said, noting Yates Center athletes took first or second in every running event.
“And our field event people did a good job of picking up places in their respective events,” he continued. “We are getting solid points from them. I’m proud of the effort.”
The Wildcat boys were particularly potent, earning nine of the 10 golds in winning the team title.
Kal Hamm led the charge with three individual golds, winning the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and high jump. Meanwhile, Brett Holloway was tops in the distance races, winning both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Drake Busteed had the other individual gold in the 800 meters.
The Wildcat boys also topped all comers in all three relay races — the 4×100, 4×800 and 4×400.
On the girls’ side, Yates Center’s Makayla Jones took home first in the shot put.
There was plenty of other hardware won by the Yates Center athletes. The Wildcats placed third behind Marais des Cygnes Valley and Waverly.
“It was a great effort considering we only have seven girls on our team,” Berg said. “The runners did very well under the cold conditions. We are looking forward to better performances as the weather warms.”
The Wildcat girls racked up nine top-three finishes, while the boys had five others finish in second or third.

ANOTHER SET of Wildcats, from Marmaton Valley, also had several impressive showings.
“We were up against some great competition, which our athletes needed to see,” Marmaton Valley head coach Russell Plaschka said.
On the boys’ side, Marmaton Valley’s Chance Stevenson took bronze in the 300 hurdles, fourth in the triple jump and fourth in the 110 hurdles. Brady Newman placed fourth in the high jump, while Trent Johnson finished fourth in the javelin.
For the girls, Kyla Drake took third in the triple jump and sixth in the 200. Misty Storrer finished fourth in the 400.
“We hope to have a strong showing at the Waverly meet next week,” Plaschka said.
