Thomas H. Bowlus, president of Allen County State Bank, today is quietly celebrating the completion of 50 years of service as city treasurer. During that half century he has helped to promote the growth of Iola from a village which had no paved streets, no water or gas service, to one of the best cities in eastern Kansas. Bowlus was elected treasurer in 1899. At that time Iola had the council form of government and all city officers were elected. In 1910, Iola adopted the present commission form of government under which the city treasurer and other officers are appointed.
