PARSONS — About 57 tons of trash got dumped at the Parsons dump in March thanks to an offer by the city to accept bulk trash for free on Saturdays in March, according to The Parsons Sun. A city official said 152 people took advantage of the offer the first two weeks and 122 the third week. Items included 886 tires, 10 batteries, 64 pieces of furniture and 84 appliances. The effort aims to clean up the city by removing bulk items like furniture and appliances and debris from people’s yards.

OTTAWA — Franklin County Health Department will promote walking and active living thanks to a $7,900 grant from the Governor’s Council on Fitness, the Ottawa Herald reported. Proposed projects include installation of “share the road” signs on roads with high bike and pedestrian usage, benches and recycling bins at parks, building or renovating walking paths and trails and more.

PARSONS — Parsons High School principal Matthew Rogers is leaving the district to serve as superintendent for Vermillion USD 380, the Parsons Sun reported. Rogers said his wife took a job in Topeka so he’s following her to that area.
