February programs for adults at Iola Public Library begin with the monthly Intrepid Readers book discussion program.
The selection for February is Lolita, by Vladimir Nabokov. Long before Jayme Closs and Jaycee Dugard headlined the news, a young girl was kidnapped in New Jersey and led away to live in captivity. Her story inspired this controversial 1955 novel about a middle-aged professor obsessed with his sexually precocious 12-year-old stepdaughter. The best-seller became a cult classic and is on several international lists of 100 best novels. The discussion takes place at 2 p.m. Thursday.
The next in the A Message of Hope series will be at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Flewharty-Powell Annex to Iola Public Library, 211 East St. The topic is Healthy Relationships: Friendships, Dating & Marriage, presented by Hope Unlimited and Humanity House. The program will address what a healthy relationship looks like and what to do if yours is not.
