Iola Public Library adult programs for July begin with the Intrepid Readers book discussion group, which will discuss “Cherokee America” by Margaret Verble.

It’s 1875 and Check Singer is a Cherokee Nation matriarch with five sons, the wife of a dying husband and the manager of her family’s successful potato farm.

This new family saga, a prequel to Pulitzer-finalist “Maud’s Line,” is packed with subplots, details about life in the Nation when it was a sovereign land, and the rules of Cherokee culture, spoken and unspoken, that have been passed down for generations. It is a study of both character and culture. Because July 4 falls on a Thursday this year, the Intrepid Readers will meet one day earlier than usual, at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
