In an effort to pique the interest of the young in local history, the Allen County Historical Museums is starting a scavenger hunt of sorts.
A monthly question will be posted on the comics page of The Iola Register. The correct answer, found in historic sites around town, will be rewarded by a drawing for a T-shirt.
“I think the monthly contests will be a fun way to introduce our youth to the museums and special events,” said Jeff Kluever, director of the museums.
The first question is, “How many prisoners could be held in each jail cell in the Old Jail Museum?”
To discover the answer, visit the Old Jail Museum, 203 N. Jefferson, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday for a free tour of the museum.
Submissions must be received at the Historical Museum by Aug. 1. The first name will be drawn on Aug. 2.

THE ALLEN County Historical Society is also planning a Kid’s Day from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 at the museum at 20 S. Washington for youngsters five to 13.
The afternoon will be filled with stories, crafts which will include the making of clothespin dolls and soldiers and paper bag puppets and 19th century activities such as walking on stilts, playing hopscotch and jacks and trying their hand at mastering the art of yo-yos.
The Historical Museum is open from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
