Cool off and celebrate Independence Day with the Iola Elks for the annual Ed Hendrix Fishing Derby and Fireworks Display.
Gates open to the public at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Elks Lake. Registration for a fishing derby for kids up to age 16 begins at 8 a.m. and the derby takes place between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Bait will be provided and participants receive a free T-shirt while supplies last, an entry prize and lunch. A parent or guardian needs to sign for each participant. An awards ceremony and lunch will be between 11 a.m. to noon. Concessions will be available for those who dont participate in the derby.
At 12:30 p.m., children up to age 16 can bring a turtle to compete in the Land Box Turtle Race.
An all-age Carp Fishing Tournament takes place between 1 to 3 p.m. with a $5 entry fee. A cash prize is paid for the largest carp. Anyone under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The winner will be announced at 3:30 p.m.
Kids games take place from 1 to 3 p.m.
A raffle drawing and silent auction begins at 3:45 p.m.
Music and fireworks will be provided from 6:30 p.m. to dusk, at approximately 9:30 p.m. when the awesome fireworks display begins.
