JoAnn Butler came to work Friday morning to find her store, Jones Jewelry, 5 N. Jefferson Ave., had been broken into.
The store was entered through a portion of the lower part of the all-grass front door that had been smashed.
Inside Butler found a display case also smashed. Gone were six sterling silver pendants valued altogether at $300.
“It must have been someone pretty small,” Butler said of the thief. “The hole (in the door glass) wasn’t very big and, after thinking about it, we looked for blood and there wasn’t any.”
Boxes that contained the pendants were found behind the store, Butler said.
Later Friday Iola police officers met with sheriff’s department personnel to view images collected overnight by surveillance cameras attached to the Allen County Law Enforcement Center, some of which may have recorded activity at the store, just across Jefferson Avenue.
Butler said she was at the store until 7 p.m. Thursday and arrived at 6:40 a.m. Friday.
Butler said she was surprised that no one noticed the broken door glass before she arrived, well after daylight.
“I guess I’m lucky no one else came in,” she said.
Butler figured damage to the door and showcase might be as much as $2,000.
“I have insurance,” she said, “but I think the deductible is $1,000.”
