Area man dies after being hit by train

A Humboldt man was killed when he hit by a train near Mildred Wednesday.

MILDRED — Dustin E. Vanatta, Humboldt, was killed after deputies said he was hit by a train Wednesday morning.

According to the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Vanatta apparently parked his vehicle about 50 yards east of U.S. 59, just north of Utah Road, and walked about 60 feet to the railroad tracks, where he was hit by a southbound Union Pacific train.

Allen County Emergency Medical Services, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene at 7:53 a.m. where Vanatta was found.

An investigation into the incident continues.
