A house at 431 S. Fourth St. sustained heavy smoke and fire damage after it burned Saturday evening.

Iola Fire Chief Corey Isbell said the cause of the fire has not been determined.

The occupant, whose name was not released, was not at home at the time of the blaze.

Firefighters received the call about 9:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived to find the front side fully involved with fire and smoke.

The Iola Fire Department received mutual aid from the Allen County Volunteer Fire Department, while Iola police officers, Allen County sheriff’s deputies and even Kansas Highway Patrol troopers all offered traffic control while crews were at the scene.

Firefighters escaped injury when the home’s front porch collapsed.

Isbell said one firefighter was near the porch when it collapsed, but he was able to stay out of harm’s way.

Crews cleared the scene after midnight Sunday morning.

“We had a great turnout when we called for help,” Isbell said. “The volunteers helped us out tremendously.”
