MORAN — Moran may soon be getting a farmers market.
The size and scope of the market is yet to be determined, Moran City Clerk Taeler Carr told City Council members Monday.
Carr said she was approached recently by a local resident eager to see a market in place.
“I told her if she did the footwork, I’d bring it to the Council,” Carr reported.
The market would like to start small, perhaps one day a month, Carr said.
She suggested it be held at the Moran City Park, “to help out some of our local people who can’t get certain produce.”
Council members expressed little interest in charging vendors, and Carr noted organizers likely would try for something small, and not require licensing for sales.
Such an operation would likely not require any authorization from the Council, City Attorney Bret Heim noted.
Carr promised she would keep the Council updated on any progress.
MORAN continues to wait for Allen County commissioners to draft a countywide neighborhood revitalization plan.
Such programs are economic development tools designed to encourage property owners to improve their homes through remodeling or new construction by offering a partial refund of the increased property taxes they would incur.
While cities such as Iola have had their own NRPs for several years, the county is looking for something similar throughout the rest of the county.
Doing so would require an interlocal agreement with the other municipalities, Heim noted.
COUNCILOR Nancy Houk said she’s fielded complaints from residents who reported seeing the ballfield lights for baseball and softball games at Moran City Park turned on too early in the afternoon.
Houk said residents have spotted lights turned on as early as 4:30 p.m. on some days.
“That’s wasting electricity,” she said. “Why are we turning lights on 2½ hours before they need to be?”
