Multiple area high schools, including Humboldt, Chanute, Parsons, Oswego and Fort Scott, were briefly placed in lockdown Wednesday afternoon, after each was targeted in an apparent “swatting” incident.

The Parsons Police Department reported the threats all came from a similar source: a male telephoning law enforcement to say he “planned to shoot up the high school.”

Humboldt, Parsons and Chanute high schools rescinded their lockdowns within an hour, after first responders investigated and found their campuses were secure.

According to the Parsons Police Department, the calls appear to be part of a statewide “swatting” incident, in which an individual makes a false report to emergency services to trigger a police response.
