A body, believed to be that of a 12-year-old boy struck and killed by a train near Erie Wednesday, has been found.
Neosho County Sheriff Greg Taylor announced Sunday that the body had been found near a dam about two miles south of U.S. 400 in rural Labette County.
Kollin Showalter, 12, Erie, had been missing since Wednesday when authorities said he and Arthur Pollries, 16, Walnut, were struck and killed by a Union Pacific Train on a railroad bridge over the Neosho River just south of Erie.
Taylor said video footage taken from the train indicated the youths were unable to outrun the train.
Pollries’ body was found at the scene, but authorities were unable to find Showalter in the swollen Neosho, which had been flowing near flood stage in the wake of several torrential storms earlier this month.
The high water level and swift current forced authorities to suspend the search effort on multiple occasions. In fact, Taylor said a day earlier this search was going to be suspended until the river dipped back to normal levels.
The body was pulled from the water — more than 30 miles downstream from the accident site — and turned over to the Neosho County coroner’s office, Taylor said in a news release.
