Chase Martin, a relative newcomer to Iola, is the newest Iola City Council member.

Martin was appointed Monday to fill the unexpired term of Jon Wells, who relinquished his seat when he was sworn in as mayor earlier this month.

Martin, who works at Verizon Wireless, spoke about his affinity for Iola in the short time he was here previously.

Following a five-year stint in active duty with the Marines, Martin attended Allen Community College in 2012 and 2013.

“Before that, I’d never been to Kansas in my life,” said Martin, who previously lived in Hawaii, Colorado and California before planting his roots back in Iola.

“Long story short, I fell in love with it here. I fell in love with Kansas. More specifically, I fell in love with this town.

“I could have gone anywhere I wanted to,” added Martin, who is not married, nor does he have children. “Ultimately, I decided to come back here because of the way I feel about this town. I’m looking forward to doing good things with this Council.”

Martin was appointed by Wells, and confirmed, 6-0, by the other Council members, minus Bob Shaughnessy, who was absent.

Martin was one of four Iolans in Iola’s First Ward to throw his hat in the ring. The others under consideration were J.D. McRae, Michael Springeman and Larry Walden.
