The Iola Middle School Pony football team just keeps winning.

After a 22-12 win for the seventh grade and a 36-0 win for the eighth grade on Thursday over Fort Scott, the Ponies hosted Osawatomie for a make-up game on Monday and wiped the floor with the Trojans.

Osawatomie was originally scheduled as the season opener on Aug. 30, but had to reschedule due to rain.

The seventh-grade Ponies stomped Osawatomie 44-6 and the eighth-grade Ponies demolished the Trojans 54-0.

Iola’s seventh-graders led 30-6 at the half and cruised their way to their third win of the season.

“Several boys had to step up and play different parts tonight due to sick personnel,” Ellis said. “I was much more pleased how we finished the game. Now we need to pull it together as we face a tougher strength of schedule starting on Thursday.”

Gage Skahan had two touchdowns and Mac Leonard and Drayden Reiter had touchdowns. Landon Weide also ran the ball back for a score.

The eighth-grade Ponies were dominant from the start, building up a 38-point halftime lead.

“The boys came out tonight on a Monday make-up game and took care of business,” Ellis said. “Defense stepped up big time and they were relentless. We had several key players on offense that scored. The boys played hard and I am proud of their efforts.”

Carter Hutton ran for a touchdown and threw for a touchdown while Holden Barker ran for two, Jarrett Herrman ran for one and caught one and Kyler Mittelmeier ran for a touchdown.

The Ponies will travel for a tough game at Santa Fe Trail on Thursday.

Cubs

The middle school Cubs fell to Fredonia 34-14 to fall to 2-1.

“We turned the ball over on three straight possessions deep in our end to spot them 22 points in the first quarter,” head coach Mike Miller said. “After that, we played pretty well defensively. They were a good, physical team and we struggled to find a rhythm offensively. It’s hard to win any time you turn it over 5 times, so we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.”

Aiden Gean had 10 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

Gavin Jaro led the team with seven tackles, Trey Sommer and Maddox Johnson had six and Dakota Slocum had five.

Humboldt will travel to Erie/Galesburg on Thursday.
