NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks Corp.’s Howard Schultz is stepping down as executive chairman of the coffee company he helped transform into a global brand, and says public service may be in his future.

Schultz, 64, says he is considering many possibilities.

“I’ll be thinking about a range of options for myself, from philanthropy to public service, but I’m a long way from knowing what the future holds,” he said in a letter to employees.

Schultz said “for some time now, I have been deeply concerned about our country — the growing division at home and our standing in the world.”

Schultz emphasized his roots, saying, “I still feel like a kid from Brooklyn who grew up in public housing” and that he’d “set out to build a company that my father, a blue-collar worker and World War II veteran, never had a chance to work for.”
