People living in Allen County who have vehicles registered elsewhere soon may be contacted by Allen County officers.
County commissioners Tuesday morning asked Sheriff Tom Williams to have his officers look into the matter and agreed with him that initially a letter of warning giving violators 30 days to change registration would be appropriate.
Without specific accusations, commissioners said they were aware of people living permanently in Allen County who had vehicles registered in other counties and even out of state, with reason to think they’re doing it to avoid paying higher vehicle taxes here.
Coffey County is an example they mentioned. Because of massive valuation of the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant, Coffey County has much higher total valuation than Allen County and consequently substantially lower property tax levies, which also means much lower taxes on vehicles at time of registration.
If those found to be in violation of state law requiring vehicle registration in the county of residence don’t register vehicles in Allen County, they may be issued a citation.

ALLEN COUNTY ambulance personnel, on their nickel, will buy pink shirts to wear while on duty during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“They all thought it was a good idea and the shirts will have our logos on them,” said Jason Nelson, ambulance director.
He also noted the latest accounting showed collections for ambulance runs during 2010 at $403,860, $31,000 ahead of a year ago.
“We’ve made quite a few (mutual aid) runs into Bourbon County lately,” he said.

COMMISSIONERS accepted a bid of $33,985 from Kansas City Bobcat for a skid steer loader, with delivery by the end of October.
The bid was the lowest of six. After a fork attachment is added to the purchase, the county will be out just $235, however. A year ago commissioners purchased a skid steer loader from Storrer Implement, Iola, with a buy-back option that will pay for all but $235 of the new unit.
