Emergency personnel will be better directed when responding to an incident on U.S. 169 in Allen County.
County commissioners were told Tuesday morning signs to identify roads crossing the highway by overpasses soon would arrive from Welborn Sales, Salina.
To deal with the 11 overpasses will require 22 signs, one on each side, costing $1,800.
The signs will be placed at 1150 St. and Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Nevada roads.
Emphasis for the project came from occasional confusion when responders were asked to deal with an event near “the Humboldt exit,” of which there are three.
Commissioners agreed to spend $70,500 with J&J Contractors, Iola, to resurface the courthouse parking lots and their entrance with concrete. The bid was about $2,000 less than one for asphalt.
Ron Holman, courthouse maintenance supervisor, said the lots were crumbling — a fact to which Sheriff Bryan Murphy attested — and potholes were a nuisance.
They also gave Iola Kiwanis Club permission to use the courthouse lawn for its Easter egg hunt Saturday. The hunt will start at noon “and probably be over by 12:07,” said Kiwanian Tom Nevans.
A sign advertising an Aging with Attitude Expo on May 28 will be permitted on the southwest corner of the courthouse lawn, with erection two weeks ahead of the event.
Beth Toland, early childhood education coordinator at Allen Community College, talked about a project, Talk, Read, Play Allen County, that is in the formative stages. The undertaking will use over-sized devices to give children a leg up on reading and comprehension. Seven local agencies involved with early childhood education will join in.
