Throngs of football fans who flooded Bourbon Street and the French Quarter in New Orleans weren’t the only ones thrilled by Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Correctly picking the final score of Super Bowl XLIV — New Orleans Saints 31, Indianapolis Colts 17 — also meant winning an oak entertainment center for Iolan Floyd Scheer.
Scheer’s name was drawn from the seven who correctly predicted the score, out of the nearly 4,400 who entered the Iola Register’s 2010 Super Bowl Sweepstakes. The entertainment center, valued at $699, came from Ulrich Furniture.
The other six names stayed in the drawing until their names were drawn for prizes — in descending order according to value — and then the Register’s contest staff moved to second place, for which 10 people were within one point of the exact score. Another eight were two points from perfection. The other 15 winners’ names were drawn from those that were within three points of being right to round out the 40 prizes awarded in the sweeps.
A complete list of the winners will appear in Tuesday’s Register.
The result came as a relative surprise for the 4,385 prognosticators. Roughly 2,500 of the entries predicted the Colts would win, 600 more than those who favored the Saints. Participants could enter at any or all of this year’s 108 merchants who provided cash or merchandise for the contest.
All prizes are to be claimed from the merchants who provided them unless otherwise noted at the bottom of Tuesday’s list.
