Alan “A.J.” C. Johnson, 64, of Gas died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
He was born May 14, 1947, in Denver, Colo., to Curtis and Shirley (Kloberdanz) Johnson. He grew up in Denver where he graduated from East High School in 1965 and Colorado State University in 1969. That same year he began a 40-year career with Gates Rubber Company. He retired from Gates as a project development engineer in 2009. He had been a dedicated employee with 36 years of perfect attendance until he was diagnosed with cancer. He was issued a patent in 2010 with Gates Rubber Company.
In 1969, he married Barbara Gillingham. They had three children and later divorced.
On June 29, 1998, he married Judy Utley in Miami, Okla. They had made their home in Gas since 2005.
He enjoyed traveling, especially along Route 66. He liked the American Southwest and enjoyed hiking and motorcycling in the mountains with friends. He had an avid interest in classic autos which he owned and enjoyed throughout the years. He was a member of the Colorado State Alumni Association.
He is survived by his wife of the home; three children, Vaughn Johnson and his wife, Jade, and Eric Johnson, Arvada, Colo., and Leandra Johnson, Golden, Colo.; two stepchildren, Bryan Riebel, Pittsburg, and Jennifer Riebel, Iola; his mother, Shirley Johnson, Denver; his mother-in-law, Florence Utley, Iola; a sister, Linda Lecci, Greenwood Village, Colo.; two grandchildren, Michaela Riebel and Linus Johnson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Johnson.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. Burial will be in LaHarpe Cemetery.
