Vernon H. “Red” Garner, Jr. was born April 24, 1928, in Iola, the son of Vernon H. “Bus” and Gladys Lorraine (Williams) Garner. He grew up in Iola along with two brothers, Ronald Garner and Richard Garner, both now deceased, and two sisters, Phyllis Bass of Leavenworth, and Janice Lane of Everest, Kan.
On Dec. 25, 1949, Vernon married Emma Kathleen “Ducky” Newman in Fort Scott. To this union three children were born, Linda, Phillip “Lynn” and Vernon.
Red had worked for LeHigh Portland Cement Company in Iola, and then was a welder for Williams Pipeline in Welda. He was a member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church, Golden Square Masonic Lodge No. 71, served on the City of Iola Zoning Committee and had been a volunteer police officer.
His life with us was ended on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016.
He leaves to mourn, his daughter, Linda Young and husband, James of Kansas City, Kan.; two grandsons, James Young Jr. and wife, Kimberly of St. Louis, Mo., and Jared “Bear” Young of Kansas City, Kan.; his two sisters and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his two sons and his two brothers.
Visitation will be 7-8 p.m., Friday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola, with burial to follow in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Ward Chapel A.M.E.
