Billy Edward Culp, 76, Petrolia, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, in Kansas City, Kan., after a three-year battle with cancer. Bill was born on Jan. 5, 1940 in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Elmer O. and MaeBelle Jean (Graham) Culp.
The family moved to LaHarpe during the 1951 flood. Bill graduated from Iola High School in 1959 and went on and joined the U.S. Air Force. He served eight years before being honorably discharged. Bill worked for the M.K.T. Railroad for 30 years before retiring in 1997.
He married Barbara J. Allen on Sept. 29, 1962, at First Baptist Church in Erie. Barbara preceded him in death on July 22, 1994. Bill later married Edna Mueller on Jan. 5, 1995. She survives.
Bill had several hobbies that he enjoyed such as fishing, traveling and working in the garden and yard work. He also loved watching the NFL and listening to music and going dancing. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. Bill was baptized in First Christian Church in Kansas City, Kan., in 1948. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Chanute.
Bill also is survived by his children, Edward Culp, Larry Culp, Billy E. Culp, Jr. and Barbara J. Morris; brothers, Ruben L.R. and James A. Culp; sisters, Elizabeth Nuss, Dorothy Yeager and Katherine Taylor; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and wife Barbara.
A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Countryside Funeral Home, Johnson Chapel, at 101 N. Highland St. in Chanute. Cremation will follow and inurnment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt at a later date.
