Douglas Scott Olinger, 75, Kansas City, Mo., passed away Monday, May 14, 2018.
Doug was born Aug. 6, 1942 in Arkansas City, to Joseph John and Imogene (Saar) Olinger. His childhood was spent in Iola with many visits to grandparents, Lloyd and Fannie Saar, Chanute. After graduating from Hickman High School, Columbia, Mo., in 1960, Doug joined the US Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Hanson as Machinist Mate E4 patrolling the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War. Honorably discharged in 1963, he returned to Kansas City and began a successful career in the insurance field at Lynn Insurance. During his career, he managed insurance offices in Bella Vista and Springdale/Fayetteville, Ark. He was an avid bowler who scored a 230-560 as a 15 year old, loved to fish Beaver Lake, Ark., and any pond, river, or lake that looked inviting. He loved his family and will be dearly missed.
Preceded in death by his parents, Doug is survived by daughter and caregiver, Kimberly Fitch (Tim), son Gregory Olinger (Mary); sister L.J. Deanie Olinger; brother Dan (Susan) Olinger; grandchildren Josh, Bret (Valerie), Nate, Alex and Alessandra; great grandchildren Lily, Finley and Evie; niece Adena (Ben); and nephew Scott; and aunt Della Saar.
Cremation has taken place. Interment at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, Mo. Memorial contributions in memory of Doug may be designated to a musical garden at Bowlus Fine Arts Center, 205 E. Madison Avenue, Iola KS 66749.
