Edith Thohoff Vail, age 90, of Iola, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Windsor Place in Iola.

Edith was the youngest of three children born to Iver and Edith (Moore) Fowler. She was born on May 25, 1929, in Iola. She was a lifelong resident of Iola, graduating from Iola High School with the Class of 1947. Following high school she went on to earn a music degree from Bethany College. Edith was married to George W. Thohoff in September 1952. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Evelyn Ann. They later divorced. Edith married Claude M. Vail on Feb. 10, 1994, in First Christian Church, Iola. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church. Edith was a 50-plus year member of the Iola American Legion Auxiliary.

She worked as secretary for the Allen County road and bridge crew before going to work as a social worker. She worked for over 40 years in the SRS offices in Iola and Chanute before retiring from her career as a social worker in 1989. Edith enjoyed playing clarinet in the Iola City Band for many years. She loved any animal she crossed paths with but her cats and dogs held a very dear place in her heart. Edith was an avid Kansas City Royals baseball fan, watching every game intently.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill Fowler; sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Payne; and a stepson, Ron Vail.

She is survived by her husband, Claude Vail of Iola; daughter, Evelyn Ann Thohoff, of Iola; two-stepsons, Kevin Vail and wife, Amber, of Erie, Mark Vail of Towanda; two stepdaughters, Hadara Steadman and husband, Eric, of Greenville, Pa., and Patricia McClure and husband, Tom, of Chandler, Ariz.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Hwy. 54, Iola. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Iola. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the start of the service on Monday. Friends may pay their respects as Edith will lie in state from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
