Rachel E. Grantham, 99, formerly of Lawrence, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Garden Terrace of Overland Park. 

She was born April 25, 1910, in Iola, the daughter of Perry and Emma Powell Heath. She lived for many years in Lawrence. She was a graduate of Iola Community Junior College and received her bachelor’s degree in teaching from Emporia State University.

She was a retired school teacher and librarian for USD 497 in Lawrence. She taught first at Woodlawn Elementary School and then at McAllister Elementary School.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Theta Sigma Upsilon social sorority and the Kappa Kappa Iota professional sorority. She was a lifetime member of the National Educational Association. For many years she was the docent coordinator at Watkins Community Museum and also volunteered for Audio Reader. 

On Oct. 9, 1933, she married Wendell P. Grantham in Allen County. He died April 6, 1954. 

Survivors include a son, Winston, Lenexa, a daughter, Marilyn Good, Austin, Texas, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.

She will lie in state at the mortuary from noon to 9 p.m. Monday.
