Suzanne Hoyt Marquis, 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2015, under the incredible and tender care of Grace Hospice and Care Haven Homes.
Suzie was born Nov. 3, 1930, in Iola. She had two older siblings, John and Shirley. After graduating from Iola High School, Suzie became a diehard Jayhawk and a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Graduating from KU in 1952, Suzie moved to Kansas City to begin a short, but rewarding career as a physical therapist. It was during this time that she met her husband of the next 55 years, Ed Marquis.
In 1957, the family moved back to Iola where Ed would own and operate Iola Meat Processors and Suzie would raise their four children. Iola was always home, but after Ed’s retirement in 1984, they spent most of their time between Tubac, Ariz., and their summer cottage on Lake Charlevoix in northern Michigan.
Our mom was always our harbor in the storm. She was a kind and gracious woman who loved her family and friends dearly. She enjoyed her group bridge games, a good crossword puzzle, hitting “zingers” on the golf course, and, of course, a vodka tonic at 5 o’clock. We loved our mom deeply and we will miss her every day.
Suzie was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 2009.
She is survived by her four children, Linda (Bill) Maness, Wichita; John (Lisa), Prairie Village; Jennifer (Andy), Spring Hill; Hoyt (Debbie), Leawood, and seven grandchildren, Emily, Joe, Kristen, Kaitlin, Allison, Sarah and Alex.
Services will be at 3 p.m. April 10 at St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church in Prairie Village.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 3846 W. 75th, Prairie Village, KS 66208.
